India, Pakistan brace for severe cyclone, deploy rescuers to coastal regions

BENGALURU, India (AP) — India and Pakistan braced for the first severe cyclone this year expected to hit their coastal regions later this week, as authorities on Monday halted fishing activities and deployed rescue personnel. From the Arabian Sea, Cyclone Biparjoy is aiming at Pakistan’s Sindh province and the coastline of the western Indian state of Gujarat. It is forecast to make landfall on Thursday and could reach maximum wind speeds of up to 200 kph (124 mph), according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.Disaster management personnel have been deployed to densely populated regions and cities that will be in the storm’s path. A few tour roads and hiking destinations in Joshua Tree National Park remained closed Sunday evening as firefighters worked to contain a 1,000-plus acre blaze that began burning on Saturday, June 10, officials said.The fire was reported around 4 p.m. on Saturday burning around 300 acres in an area with low vegetation that quickly spread the flames, according to the National Park Service.
