A string of burglaries at a downtown St. Paul coffeehouse and restaurant has been discouraging for the owners, but they’ve been buoyed by the outpouring of community support they’ve received.The latest incident — and the one that caused the most damage — happened early Friday at Lost Fox in Lowertown. The business’s motion detector went off about 4:30 a.m. Large windows to the building had been shattered, but not much was taken, said Annie Rose, who owns Lost Fox with her husband.After Friday’s break-in on Fourth Street, across from Union Depot and its Green Line light-rail station, a Lost Fox Facebook post displayed photos of the damage and read, “I am so tired. Come have a coffee this weekend so we can pay our deductible. Homeowners in two more Denver neighborhoods now have the right to build accessory dwelling units on their properties without going through a long rezoning process.The City Council on Monday made Valverde and Athmar Park on the west side of the town the latest corners of the city with blanket rezoning that allows residents to build secondary housing structures on their lots without applying for that zoning on an individual basis.Those units, often called ADUs or sometimes granny flats or mother-in-law apartments, are viewed as a key tool in the city’s affordable housing efforts because they allow for more housing density in residential areas and, at smaller sizes than primary homes, are expected to provide more affordable options for renters and people living on fixed incomes.“I believe allowing ADUs in Valverde and Athmar will allow our neighborhoods to change and grow while expanding affordable housing options in our neighborhood,” Adriana Lopez, president of the ...

Colorado House plans revival of Polis’s gutted zoning reform bill

A week after the Colorado Senate gutted Gov. Jared Polis’s marquee land use reform bill, House Democrats are preparing to reverse some of those changes and return key zoning provisions to a measure that’s repeatedly been altered as its passed through the Capitol.Under amendments set to be added to the bill Tuesday, SB23-213 would again allow for accessory dwelling units — like carriage houses — to be built on single-family lots, albeit only in more populous parts of the state. The amendments would also reintroduce provisions clearing the way for density and apartment buildings near transit areas in Colorado cities, along with encouraging looser parking requirements and new restrictions on what HOAs can prohibit.All of those provisions, described to the Denver Post on Monday by lawmakers involved, were in previous versions of the bill and had been stripped from it in order to ensure that it passed the Colorado Senate. Superintendent Alex Marrero is recommending that the leaders of each Denver high school and school with 6th- to 12th-graders decide whether to place armed police officers on their individual campuses, according to new a draft safety plan released Monday.Denver Public Schools’ Board of Education tasked Marrero with creating the plan after a student shot two administrators inside East High School on March 22.The district expects to release a final draft next month and Marrero cautioned plan could change, saying, in a statement, “This first version is far from a finished product.”But for now, Marrero is recommending all district-run high schools and combined middle/high schools be allowed to engage with parents and students, and then decide whether they want school resource officers — rather than create a blanket policy for Denver schools.The decision to have Denver Police Department officers on those campuses would be determined by each qualifying school and reviewed annua...

2 teens stabbed near Los Angeles High School in Mid-Wilshire

Two teenage boys were stabbed Monday near Los Angeles High School in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Calls about the incident near the intersection of Olympic and Rimpau boulevards came in at around 4:20 p.m., officials with the Los Angeles Fire Department told KTLA.  Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department said the stabbing was the "result of an on-campus dispute between students," and that both victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition. “Another senseless stabbing in our community near Los Angeles High School,” Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said in a statement. “Our thoughts go out to the two victims and their families.
